Code of Conduct - Coaches
All coaches are expected to adhere to the following rules at all times. Failure by a coach to adhere to the following rules may result in action being taken against him or her by BGLHC in accordance with its disciplinary procedures.
Coaches Should:
- Always act in BGLHC’s best interest and promote its positive ethos and aspirations
- Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every player, coach and club Member and treat everyone equally within the context of the sport
- Prohibit any use of camcorders and cameras where junior members are present unless parental consent is provided
- Place the well-being and safety of the player above the development of performance
- Develop an appropriate working relationship with players based on mutual trust and respect.
- Encourage and guide players to accept responsibility for their own behaviour and performance
- Ensure the practices they direct or advocate are appropriate for the age, maturity, experience and ability of the individual and group
- At the outset clarify with players exactly what is expected of them and what players are entitled to expect of their coach
- Respect players’ rights to their own personal development, independence and self-determination and be supportive of other coaches and coaching methods
- Consistently display high standards of behaviour and appearance both on and off the pitch
- Be aware of how to deal with and report the disclosure or suspicion of abuse
- Immediately report to BGLHC incidents of inappropriate language, behaviour or abuse by any player, coach or club member
- Know where the first aid box is
Coaches Should Not:
- Act or fail to act in such a way as to bring BGLHC into disrepute
- Exert any undue influence on players to gain any personal benefit or reward
- Allow parents access to changing areas where junior members are present
- Participate in one to one coaching other than during normal coaching sessions and always in the presence of other coaches and players
- Allow or engage in inappropriate touching of any form
- Make sexually suggestive comments about or to a player, even in fun
- Refer to a player’s ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, or sexuality in an inappropriate manner
- Allow players or other coaches to use inappropriate language
- Do things of a personal nature for junior members that they can do for themselves
- Attempt to treat injuries unless qualified to do so
- Meet junior members away from the Club environment or a meeting place without a parent or other adult being present
- Knowingly allow or condone the use of performance enhancing drugs and seek compliance by players with all anti doping policies of Scottish Hockey Union
